2025 Spring Soloist Joshua Tom, Violin

Joshua Tom, Violin

Joshua Tom began his musical journey at the age of four at the Langley Community Music School with Leanne Wendt. He attributes his keen sense of musical appreciation to his early exposure to a variety of musical genres. In 2019, under the guidance of Peter Ing, he won first place at the BC Provincials where he performed Méditation from Thaïs and Haydn’s Concerto in G Major. Joshua loves performing and, accompanied by his sister on piano, has played at several senior residences.

Joshua’s orchestral adventure includes the Vancouver Youth Symphony Orchestra (VYSO), Sinfonietta at the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra School of Music (VSOSOM), and North Sound Youth Symphony. His commitment to excellence has continued over the years and has been fostered by Nicholas Wright, concertmaster of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra (VSO), Jason Ho, former member of the VSO, our own Grant Donnellan (WWU), and Judith Widrig (WWU).

After graduating from high school, Joshua briefly pursued a degree in Criminology at Simon Fraser University. However, he soon realized that his passion for music far surpassed his aspirations in law. In pursuit of his true calling, he joined the VSOSOM Prep Program, where he now studies under Yi Zhou, Carla Birston, and Bogdan Dulu, striving to elevate his performance to new heights.

Joshua consistently seeks to refine his skills and expand his musical repertoire. Last winter, he made his chamber music debut at the Bellingham Festival of Music where he performed Shostakovich’s Piano Trio No. 2 in E Minor with Penelope Keep and Mia Kelly. Looking ahead, he plans to further his violin studies at Western Washington University, aiming to hone his craft and one day make significant contributions to the classical music world.
